Mole deep-cleans your Mac when disk space is low

This week, LIZHI.SHOP brings a new Mac tool: Mole. If you're looking for a tool to clean up Mac disk space, start by seeing how it handles caches, app leftovers, and large files.

The tool has a strong following in developer circles, with over 60,000 stars on GitHub — even Paul Graham (a world-renowned programmer and investor) once wrote a post about it.

Mole brings five major functions — cache cleaning, app management, disk analysis, hardware monitoring, and system optimization — together into one app developed natively in Swift, helping you understand your Mac's storage usage and running status more intuitively.

Mole is now part of the genuine software lineup at LIZHI.SHOP, where the licensing method and software information can both be verified.

Deep cache cleaning

After you've used a Mac for a while, app caches, browser caches, system logs and other files tend to quietly pile up in the background, taking up tens of GB of space.

But when you open "About This Mac" to check your storage, much of that data gets lumped into the vague category of "System Data," and it's hard to know exactly which files are taking up space — or what can be safely deleted.

图 3

Mole can scan ten common categories of cache items and sort them by the space they take up. Each item shows its specific type and size, so you can go through them one by one and choose to clean, skip, or add to a protection list to avoid deleting something by mistake.

All files are shown before deletion, and recoverable deletions go to the Trash first, so you can get them back if you change your mind. What's more, both scanning and cleaning happen on your Mac — no files are uploaded.

On my two Macs, the scans found 8.93 GB and 11.5 GB of cleanable cache, respectively.

Manage app leftovers in one place

Many people, when uninstalling an app, just drag it to the Trash. But in reality, the preferences, cache files, support components and other content the app leaves behind are often still scattered across multiple system directories.

Over time, these leftover files keep piling up and eat into your already limited storage space.

When uninstalling an app, Mole automatically finds the related leftover files and labels how much space each one takes up. Items you're unsure about are left unchecked by default, to avoid accidental cleanup.

图 5

In addition, login items and background services can be managed from the same page, so you no longer have to go into System Settings and look them up one by one.

For users who often install and test all kinds of software, Mole can also centrally manage software updates from different sources such as Homebrew, Sparkle, and the App Store, making app maintenance easier.

Treemaps that expose large files

Cleaning caches and managing app leftovers is only the beginning. What really gives people a headache are the large, rarely used files hiding in the corners. Poking through Finder level by level, you might not find the culprit even after a whole afternoon.

Opening folders one by one in Finder to check their sizes is not only inefficient, but also makes it hard to spot large files hidden in deep directories.

Mole's disk analysis feature turns your entire drive into an intuitive treemap. The more space a folder takes up, the more prominent its area — and you can click through level by level to quickly locate where the space is going.

Once you find files you don't need, you can right-click to open them directly in Finder, and move them to the Trash after confirming.

Real-time status in the menu bar

When using a Mac day to day, you may occasionally find the fan suddenly spinning at full speed and the computer getting sluggish, without knowing which piece of software is causing it.

Usually you have to open Activity Monitor to check process usage, but switching windows frequently interrupts your current workflow.

Mole provides a hardware status monitoring panel where you can view CPU, memory, GPU, disk, network, temperature and other hardware information in real time.

图 9

It also sorts the software currently running by CPU usage, helping you quickly find the program causing the performance drop or the fan to spin out of control.

Commonly watched metrics can also be viewed directly in the menu bar panel, so you can quickly check your computer's status without opening the main window. In addition, the battery level of your Mac itself and of connected iPhone, iPad, and Bluetooth devices can all be checked in one place.

One-click optimization of system services

Many Mac users are used to never shutting down, so they can open the computer and pick up right where they left off.

But as usage time adds up, the system may gradually show stuttering and slower response.

The problem is that regular users have a hard time knowing where to start with maintenance — rebuilding the Spotlight index, clearing the Quick Look cache, refreshing the thumbnail cache… these operations sound confusing just to think about.

Mole gathers these common maintenance tasks onto a single page, and operations that require administrator privileges can be completed with a single authorization.

图 11

For tasks that aren't suitable for the current environment, Mole skips them automatically and explains why. After maintenance is complete, it lists the result of each task in detail, rather than simply showing a generic "optimization complete."

You can clearly see which adjustments were made to the system, which operations were not performed, and why they weren't performed.

Final thoughts

That's the Mac tool we introduced today: Mole.

It brings cache cleaning, app management, disk analysis, system optimization, and hardware monitoring — five major functions — together, so Mac users can finish their daily maintenance work in a single tool.

Mole offers a complete Mac management solution, so you don't need to install a cleaner and uninstaller tool, a system optimization tool, and a disk analysis tool separately…

Note that Mole's command-line version is free and open source on GitHub, while the Mac App version uses a one-time purchase, lifetime license model.

The Mac App version is now available at LIZHI.SHOP and supports lifetime updates. The software offers a trial before use, so you can decide whether it fits your Mac's storage and maintenance needs.
